Founded in the 2nd century BC, Rennes is the capital of Brittany, located a few miles inland at the confluence of two rivers. In spite of a terrible fire in 1720, the city offers plenty to visit, and many Bed and Breakfasts to use as a base. The colourful, traditional timber frame houses in the historic centre are not to be missed, but there is also the 17th century parliament building, the 15th century ramparts and the 19th century Halles Martinot, housing the Saturday morning market, the third largest in France. Rennes is also a vibrant cultural city, hosting famous music and cinema festivals, and offering several museums. And not far away you can visit many typical Breton villages such as Couyère, Pance or Chapelle-Chaussée.
