In the beginning there was the ocean...but over the course of time it retreated leaving in its place the marshlands of the Poitevin between Deux-Sèvres, Charente-Maritime and the Vendée. Some 100,000 hectares of natural beauty and riches to be discovered in Bed and Breakfasts in the Marais Poitevin, where eels, otters, herons and a multitude of other birds and animals make their home between the poplars, ash trees and weeping willows, some in the drylands and some in the wetlands, the most easterly part of which is called the ‘Green Venice’. The market gardeners have learned to live with the water, and this cohabitation is apparent in the architecture of the towns and villages of the Marais Poitevin: Niort, Vallans, Charron, Chaillé-les-Marais, all with their Bed and Breakfasts ready to welcome you to this fascinating region.
